The Wild Night
trail camera images
These photos were all taken with trail cameras in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem - in Idaho and Wyoming - in 2021 and 2022. My trailcam hobby began with an assignment in 2021 to photograph grizzly bears, and I quickly became obsessed. Trail cameras, or game cameras have long been used by hunters to asses wildlife in any given area. The cameras are placed on the trunks, or branches of trees and are triggered by motion. When an animal passes by, a few photos or video is made. At night the camera uses an infrared “flash” to illuminate the animal resulting in a black and white image. Color images are made when daylight is available.
Many hours have been spent hiking, and wandering down game trails (with one hand on bear spray), finding the ideal places to hang cameras. I will forever be curious and fascinated to see who’s been sharing the trail with us. My wish is that when we know about the wildlife we share space with we will be moved to protect and preserve the ever dwindling natural world.
